  • Personalized learning

  • Real-time feedback

  • Access to information

  • Enhanced collaboration

  • Time-saving for educators

  • Special needs support

  • Language learning

The Negative Impacts of ChatGPT in Education

  • Overreliance on AI

The Technology Behind AI Chatbots Like ChatGPT Is Changing Rapidly

The technology behind OpenAI and ChatGPT has evolved significantly over the years:

  • 2018 – First version of Open Ai’sGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer)

  • 2019 – ChatGPT-2 was released

  • 2020 – ChatGPT-3 was released

Note: As AI technology continues to advance, we can expect even more powerful and versatile AI tools in the future.

How Can You Identify if Your Students Are Using OpenAI ChatGPT?

Identifying whether your students are using OpenAI ChatGPT can be challenging, as AI-generated text has become increasingly sophisticated and human-like.

Other than creating open communication and promoting the assistance of AI vs relying on it, you can use these to find out if students are using ChatGPT to write essays:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the student’s writing style

  2. Look for unusual phrasing or vocabulary

  3. Analyze content depth

  4. Check for factual errors or inconsistencies

  5. Encourage in-class discussions and presentations

  6. Use plagiarism detection tools

  7. Educate and establish guidelines

My Take on Are AI Chatbots and ChatGPT Good or Bad For Higher Education?

I like to have a positive outlook on the future, and I believe AI will only advance learning and education as we know it. OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology, Google’s BERT, Microsoft’s Bing Chatbot, or YouChat are all moving fast, and new versions are hard to keep up with.

I think about it like this – In education, we went from reading books to encyclopedias; the library was the only source of information for students.

Along came calculators, and they only assisted capabilities and sped up the process for calculations.

The advance of the World Wide Web and the internet led many to believe that having all the information at our fingertips would result in students using it to copy or cheat.

Instead, students used it for research in much the same manner. ChatGPT will change Education as we know it, but I think it will become one of the greatest learning assistance tools for students, teachers, and even parents at home wanting to help with homework.
