What Are Coursera Courses?

Coursera is an online learning platform that offers thousands of courses on a variety of subjects.

The courses are taught by leading professionals from top universities and corporations. One of these institutions is Johns Hopkins University, Maryland. 

Each course is different and the content is set by the institution itself. The course content can consist of anything from video lectures, quizzes, or manage data science projects.

Coursera courses are free to audit, which means students can have limited access to the materials but cannot participate in the graded assessments. This operates on a read-and-view style system. 

Johns Hopkins Science Courses 

The majority of the Johns Hopkins courses available on Coursera relate to the field of science.

When searching for relevant courses on the site, they can be split into more defined categories. Here is a general idea of the types of science courses on offer: 

1. Neuroscience And Neuroimaging Specialization

  • Duration: Approximately 4 months
  • Level: Intermediate

If you’ve always had an interest in the brain and how it works, you’ll be fascinated by this neuroscience course from Johns Hopkins. This is a four-part course split into the following sections: 

  1. Fundamental Neuroscience for Neuroimaging
  2. Principles of fMRI 1
  3. Principles of fMRI 2
  4. Introduction to Neurohacking in R 

Each of these courses can be taken as a unit itself, with some that are more beginner-friendly than the overall course.

Upon completion of the entire course, students will understand fMRI data design, structure, and acquisition. 

Numerous skills will be gained through these topics such as statistical analysis, statistical modeling, and image processing.

Students will also learn to read and write images of the brain in NIfTI format. 

At the end of the course, students are encouraged to take part in a hands-on project. Only the students who complete these projects will receive their certificate and earn their specialization. 

Through the paid version of the course, students will gain access to graded quizzes with feedback, graded assignments, and graded programming assignments.

The free version of the course means students can only read or view the materials.

2. Data Science

  • Duration: Approximately 11 months
  • Level: Beginner – with beginner-level experience in Python

A data science project is an in-demand profession in our technological society. Many are hoping to go into the field through the help of online learning platforms.

This advanced data science specialization covers every imaginable concept and foundational data science tools needed in the entire data science pipeline of the field.

This course is a great insight into the healthcare system and how research methods and advancements are always changing.

Students will be introduced to the biology of cancer, the steps behind cancer metastasis, defining the risks of prostate cancer, and the different stages and treatments for prostate cancer.

This learning path is ideal for anyone looking to pursue a career path in cancer research or patient care. As this is a specialization course, it is split into further subcategories. These include:

For the applied learning project, students will be asked how they will specifically examine how prostate cancer is found, diagnosed, staged, and treated.

4. Biostatistics In Public Health

Another specialization from Johns Hopkins is this biostatistics course. The aim of the course is for students to build statistical skills for use in Biological Sciences.

Students will be able to calculate statistics from public health and biomedical data as well as analyze and interpret them.
