Memrise is a fantastic tool to help you learn a new language, however, did you know you can learn more than one language at the same time?
Memrise is designed to be easy to navigate, so this first learning curve won’t take you along a difficult road. Our instructions are simple, and you should be ready in minutes. Read how to add Memrise courses below! (See also ‘Is Memrise Worth It? detailed review 2023.’)
Changing Your Course Language
To change the language of your current course, after you log in, you need to click on the “I Want To Learn” tab. Then scroll down until you see the language you want to learn.
Tap to open the language, and you’ll see a drop-down menu of just two items – “Start Learning” and “Browse More Courses”.
Don’t click “Start Learning” just yet. Instead, click “Browse More Courses”.
From there you’ll be taken to a new page. There will be a gray box at the top asking you what language you can speak. Make sure it is in the language you are most comfortable with – normally your native language.
Underneath this gray box are yellow box options. They contain language courses separated by levels. If this is your first time learning a language, pick level 1. If you’re more competent in the skill, scroll until the level description matches your confidence level.
Changing Your Native Language
All the writing on the app will be shown in your native language, or what the app believes is your native language. Even if you change the gray box / “I Speak” box to something new, the rest of the app will still be in your native language.
If the app has incorrectly guessed your native language and you want to change it, you will need to change the language settings on your device. This is where it gets your native language from.
It’s a clever idea to change your device to the language you are currently learning. This makes integration easier, as you see the words in your day-to-day life.
We would only recommend this if you’re competent in the language and are ready for more detailed or complex sentence structures.
However, the app will not show courses for a language it believes is your native tongue. For example, if the app believes your native language is English, it will not show you an English course.
You will need to change your device’s setting and base language to something else, to gain access to that course.
How To Add Memrise Courses To A Group
Groups are pods of like-minded learners who find it easier to learn in a group or class than by themselves. People in the group can compete against each other in their own personal leaderboards or compete against other groups.
This function is only available on the website and not on the apps. To create a Group, click on the Group icon on the main page of the Dashboard. There you will be asked to create a name. This name will help your friends find the group.
Then you can upload an image (but you don’t have to), and you need to click “Teaching my students” or “Learning With Friends”. If you click “Teaching my students” you will have special access to their learning data with this course creation feature.
Then you click “create your group”, and the course is made.
Groups are automatically private, so you need an invitation to join. Invitations can be offered by the creator of the group or other members (as long as the group is friends-based, not teacher-based).
Once the invite is sent, you will be given an email to join.
Now the group is set up, you need to add a course. You can do this by clicking on the Groups icon on your Dashboard, then clicking your group name.
There will be a button saying “choose a course to add”. Click this button and you will see a drop-down.
The drop-down will only offer courses you are currently learning, but if you want a different course, type in the course name in the search bar.
Switching Between Courses
Depending on what device you are using, the options will be slightly different.
Android Or IOS
If you want to change courses, you can do so by either clicking on the Home tab or clicking on the course title if you are using an iOS device.
From there you will see a list of courses you are currently learning. If you want to switch to a course you have already started, click on that course. You’ll be taken back to the same spot you left before.
If you want to learn a new course, press the “Learn Another Course” button. This will allow you to add a new language to your own course library.
Website
The process is just as simple on the web, but it starts a little differently.
First, you should visit the dashboard. From there you can see all the courses you are currently learning. You can click on whichever course you want to continue and start your lessons for the day.
If you want a new course, you should click on the menu in the top right corner. And click “discover”. You’ll be taken to the course page. Where it says “I Speak”, make sure to change the option to your preferred base language.
The front page will then change to the most popular courses for that language. If you want a specific course look on the left-hand side to see categories of languages. Or you can search for the language by inputting it into the search bar and clicking enter.
From there you will see a list of language courses based on your category choice or searched keyword.
Click on the course you want to start and it will be added to your library.
Changing Course Difficulty
Each course will have a range of difficulties. They go from level 1 to level 7. Levels 1 to 3 are for beginners, 4 to 5 are intermediate, and 6 to 7 are for advanced learners. (Check out ‘How To Ignore Words On Memrise?‘)
To decrease the difficulty, scroll to the top of the course you wish to change. Press “Previous Course”. This will take you back a level. Keep doing this until you reach the level you want.
To increase the difficulty level, scroll to the bottom of the course you wish to change. Press “Start”. This will take you to the next level. Keep doing this until you reach the level you want.

Adding courses on Memrise is very simple (see also: How To Keep A Memrise Course Private). The website is designed to be simplistic, so the hardest part of your journey is learning the language – nothing else.
Once you get the hang of the basic software, you can encourage your friends and other users to join you by adding them to a created group. Learning as a team is a lot more fun than learning by yourself. You can practice your language skills in person and help each other get past tricky spelling issues.
