What Do The Courses Teach?

The video course that requires a subscription to the Masterclass platform covers more of the foundations of playing the violin.

There is a lot more information in the video course that does not pertain to creating vibrato with your violin. With that being said, there is a lesson dedicated to vibrato which we will talk about later.

Below is an overview of the contents of the Violin 101 article available for free on the Masterclass website.

What Is Vibrato On The Violin?

The first section of the article covers what vibrato on the violin is. This is crucial to understand before you begin to try and learn how to master this skill with your instrument.

The skill is described as a fluctuation in pitch that is designed to create a warmness or richness of tone. The effect is created through fingering skills on the strings.

What Are The Types Of Vibrato?

The second section of the article talks about the different types of vibrato that you can create with your instrument. It mentions that there are multiple types of vibrato and that most violinists will master all of the techniques to allow them to create a broader range of sounds.

Masterclass Lessons with Itzhak Perlman

In this section of the article, Itzhak Perlman is introduced as the ultimate teacher of Vibrato on the violin.

Although this is true thanks to his incredibly accomplished and critically acclaimed career, it also feels like the ultimate marketing speech to encourage people to sign up for their course.

The article goes on to talk about the different techniques that you can use to create different types of vibrato with your violin.

The first few techniques talk about where the impulse for the vibrato comes from. Arm vibrato, wrist vibrato, and finger vibrato are all mentioned. It is also pointed out that Perlman typically uses finger vibrato in his work.

This part of the article goes into detail about the pros and cons of each technique and peppers some tips to help you play like the best. It is actually quite in-depth for a free article from a subscription platform.

The rest of this section talks about the different types of vibrato that you can create with your impulses. Slow vibrato, wide vibrato, and narrow vibrato are all covered.

The article goes on to talk about the different effects that these types of vibrato create and the genres of music that they are most suitable for.

How To Develop Your Vibrato Technique

This section talks about how you can develop your vibrato technique to help you master the art of violin vibrato. The article makes a point of talking about how this technique is not easy to learn and will take a lot of practice.

The different vibrato impulses are broken down into regular movements that you might be familiar with such as throwing dice or waving to yourself. This can help you get the motion right and is incredibly useful from a free resource.

The article then bullet points ways to progress your vibrato practice as you master one technique and then another. It does make a point of letting you know that the practice can take years to get right which feels disheartening.

At the end of the section, there is a link to the course, taught by Itzhak Perlman, which requires a subscription to access.

Itzhak Perlman Teaches Violin

What Mediums Are The Course Available In?

The full course is available in both video and article form. The video lessons are likely to be more informative than the articles as they are presented by Perlman himself. The articles are written by Masterclass and simply refer to the information that is available in the video course.
