Of course, though, not all Masterclasses will be for everyone. So, this course does have some very minor drawbacks.

Primarily, as there is so much information to cover, you might sometimes struggle to take it all in and compartmentalize it.

Another problem is the fact that there is no workbook that comes along with this course, so there’s no easy way to process jargon if you get stuck.

Course Duration

This is a very long course and covers over nine and a half hours – so you know it will be completely packed with information!

Who Is This Course Best For?

Pretty much anybody can benefit from this course in some form or another.

However, the people that will benefit the most from this course are those who are very passionate about filmmaking and even directing.

Who Is Phillip Bloom?

Your course instructor is Phillip Bloom and you may already be familiar with him and his work. Phillip is a British filmmaker whose career spans over thirty years.

He’s worked with CNN, CBS, and NBC, along with many British organizations.

He’s most well known for making documentaries, but he now turns his attention to helping other people who want to develop their filmmaking skills.

What To Expect

Phillip Bloom Masterclass review

This extensive course covers as we mentioned, over nine hours, and each of the 9 lessons is very comprehensive it covers topics like Cinematic shots and creative techniques to shoot cinematic shots.

Let’s take a look at each of these lessons and what they have to offer, and what you can expect.

Lesson 1: Introduction

Philip kicks the course off by giving any budding filmmaker the basics of what they should know before they even touch a camera.

You will look at the things to spot when buying a camera, what the major accessories are for camerawork such as the tripod, basics of photographic concepts, and media management.

Essentially, you will be learning the very basics of the course but these are critical for the time ahead – so it’s important to take note during this period.

Lesson 2: Beginnings

This lesson goes a little more in-depth from the previous basics and you will start to understand how things like sensors and ratios work, how shutter speed works, what the best lenses are for newbies, and much more.

You will also look at how you understand frame rate and how you can adjust it, along with learning compression and codec.

Lesson 3: Visual Storytelling

This is definitely the most creative and practical elements of the course and this is where you really get to grips with using your camera, including the critical point of the rule of thirds.

Lesson 4: Interviews

Phillip is someone who is very used to interviews, and you can learn how to get the best out of interviews when it comes to filming them and framing them – including why the locations are extremely important. He also shares the actual interview technique to improve the shots.

Lesson 5: Slow Motion

This lesson is all about the intricacies of slow-motion filming and how you can effectively use it to your advantage. You will learn the best way to shoot it and how to use the best frame rate.

Lesson 6: Timelapse

This lesson is much the same as slow motion, except you will also learn how and when the best time is to use timelapse shots. This can include things like lighting and audio considerations.

Lesson 7: Drones

Drones can be a very useful tool when it comes to aerial cinematography, so this lesson examines how you can use drones and truly cinematic aerial shots film in the best possible way, along with how it all works.

Lesson 8: Storytelling Behind The Scenes

This lesson will engage all of the skills that you have learned throughout the cinematic masterclass course, and you will finally learn how to sequence your shots. Next, you will move on to learn how you can make your very own short film!

Lesson 9: Post-Production Editing

Perhaps one of the most difficult parts of filmmaking is the post-production phase. Typically speaking, the post-production phase takes much longer than the filming itself.

In this lesson, you will learn why it is so important to get multiple shots from multiple different angles and lighting.

You will also learn how to use post-production editing software and how you might choose which shot is better.

This will certainly be the most tricky part of filmmaking for you to master, but luckily Phillip has got you covered here and tries to make it as painless as possible.

Once you’ve got to grips with all this, you should be able to make and edit your very own films – you could even follow in Phillip’s footsteps and make an engaging documentary!

Maybe even about your experiences with this Masterclass?

Is This Masterclass Worth It?

This Masterclass is definitely worth it. It’s incredibly comprehensive and all of the complex information is framed and explained in such a way that you should be able to keep up with the way the classes go.

Of course, there are lessons that are much more difficult than others, so it might take you a while to really master things lesson by lesson.

This is definitely a Masterclass worth looking into and something that you should find a lot of benefit from.
